Vi kommer alla inifrån. Det finns ingen som inte har eller har haft en mamma. Engelkes gestaltar, dansar och sjunger om och för mamman från djupt olika samhällsskikt; invandrad, infödd, död, alkoholiserad, stark, paranoid, vacker, framgångsrik, elak, levande och närvarande. I henne bor kärleken, hopplösheten och framtiden. På scenen är hon som hon är, var och blev kvar. Galen, förtvivlad och rasande rolig.

Föreställningen är en hyllning som mer eller mindre halsbrytande reflekterar våra mammor, genom deras egna texter, bilder och minnen. Alltid med kärlek, varsam hand och glödande övertygelse.

Tillsammans med dokumentärfilmaren Erik Pausers inramning, Sophie Holgerssons texter och Willi Bopps´s förtrollande ljudvärld blir Min Mamma allas mamma. Charlotte Engelkes spirituella och alldeles egna sprudlande scennärvaro sjunger, överraskar och underhåller.

My Mother is a a celebration to all mothers in the shape of a new genre documentary-musical. It explores how to bring documentary material and performing arts together in the space between the screen and audience.Mothers. They are everywhere, in every beginning. More or less caring, more or less universal. We all come from the inside. We all have connection to mothers, dead or alive. Good or bad, glad or sad or sometimes just mad. In focus are own mothers.

The Swedish director and performer Charlotte Engelkes stages together with the Swedish actor and singer Lindy Larsson a theatrical concert inspired by Frida Kahlo paintings. Based on the Mexican painter’s iconic self-portraits and  images Engelkes and Larsson together with the band make their own interpretations through a concert. The orchestra create a violent and sensitive cabaret atmosphere with cello, violin, saw, accordion and more. The repertoire of songs is a blended mix of songs by Chavela Vargas, Peggy Lee and Franz Schubert among others.

Danish Karin Ørum has created costumes and a unique scenography that refers the different paintings of Frida Kahlo the concert is build on.

Tour; Dido & Aeneas / Sasha Waltz & Guests

Residents or visitors in Berlin will be thrilled to hear that Engelkes will again perform Dido & Aeneas by Sasha Waltz at Berlin Staatsoper im Schiller Theater the 25th and 27th of February. The choreographic combination on dance and opera tells the oldest love story in English opera history; Dido & Aeneas, a myth of flight, expulsion and love in times of war, was acclaimed at its premiere.The show has been touring festivals and operahouses for the past eleven years. The Conversation describes the performance on Sydney festival: “A breathtaking visual spectacle…triumphant”.

Tour; Hamlet with Tiger Lillies

Warm winds, a beautiful moon and fantastic shows in Perth International Arts Festival. Engelkes was in Australia performing Hamlet with The Tiger Lillies,A production from REPUBLIQUE theatre in Copenhagen.  A play that´s been called “Innovative, Imaginative and incredible” by The Copenhagen Post and “Stunning, haunting and gloriously original” by This Is Cabaret.

Having previously performed in Montreal, Zurich, Istanbul, London and Holland the turn now came to Perth;  ” This musical theatre, “opera grotesque” version of Hamlet is an unexpected thrill. The new Solo; My Mother

In late January the world got a first glimpse of the production My Mother, the musical documentary celebrating all mothers. On the annual Dance exhibition in Stockholm Engelkes showed 15 minutes of the upcoming play to the many enthusiastic visitors who are now eager to see the show in full. Willi Bopp´s newwritten music, Sophie Holgersson´s writing and Erik Pauser´s documentary movies collaborate with Engelkes to create one big mother, all of our mothers. 

Swedish Radiotheatre; Ett eget rum, A room of one´s own By Virginia Woolf

Those who cannot wait until the show has premiere to hear Engelkes talk about important women can listen to the Radio Theatre where Charlotte makes the voice of Virginia Woolf, available online on Sveriges Radio Play. Åsa Lindholm directs this new take on A room of one´s own, about art and women´s place in art, understood by female artists today.

A new collaboration from Engelkes Production team and a celebration to all mothers, ever.
After a sequel of successful Engelkes solos, such as “Miss very Wagner”, “SWEET”, “Forellen and me” and “KIRA- In the house where I live”, the new solo is in progress. My Mother is a celebration to all mothers in the shape of a new genre, musical- documentary, where Engelkes uses her own mixed language of opera, dance and comedy, together with lost and found material about mothers. We all have connections to mothers, dead or alive, good or bad, glad or sad, or sometimes just mad. In focus are our own mothers to tell the story of many. Engelkes directs and performs My Mother with new music by sound designer Willi Bopp in collaboration with text writer Sophie Holgersson, filmmaker Erik Pauser, costume Anna Ardelius, choreography Bo Arenander, video Venus Krantz/Alessandro Stigliano, Light Karl Svensson.

An ASTARTE production with the kindly support from The Swedish Arts council, Kulturbryggan, The Swedish Writers’ Union, The Swedish Grants Arts Committee and Stockholms City.
